Seasonal Workers' Housing


A barracks building found in the village of Rome at Whitesbog around 1930. The cookhouse is on the right and the outhouse is on the left.


Click here to see an aerial photograph of ROME in 1940 which was comprised of six barracks type building, three cookhouses and six outhouses. The village was constructed before 1900.


Room 75, Shanty 4, Cranberry pickers Paulo Biniristo and wife live here. Settlement called Rome, on Whites Bog, Browns Mills, N.J. 4 sons live in next room. Room 21 in Shanty # 2, in settlement called Rome, on White's Bog, Browns Mills, N.J. 3 persons live here, cranberry pickers. Family of Rocco De Gruerio. Room is 6 ft. x 7 ft. and 7 ft. high. Window is 22 x 18 inches. One bed on floor. Note the bread and shoes hanging over the bed. Plenty of flies. E.F. Brown [Witness]. Location: Browns Mills, New Jersey. September 1910
